Esterase enzymes play an important role in conferring or contributing to insecticide resistance in many insects, and arthropods species. There are some model substrates that can be hydrolyzed by esterase enzymes such as α–naphthyl acetate to yield α–naphthol and acetic acid. The reagents fast blue B and SDS allow for the α–naphthol to have a strong blue color and maximum absorbance at 600nm. The intensity of the blue color is related to the enzyme activity.
